Who is Saint Agnes Soaps?

Where does the name, Saint Agnes Soaps come from?

This is a Canadian ‘vignette’, one might say. A great grandmother of mine, was an adored only child. She grew up wanting for nothing and was, it could be said, indulged. She was born in the late 1800s, and I was very fortunate to have known her.

She married my great grandfather, who was a farmer. She knew absolutely nothing about running a farm house or farming. But, her ornery nature drove her to master everything that needed to be done.

She learned how to knit clothing for the whole family, cook, make a fire, tend the animals, get the meals on, tend her nine children, support her husband, and keep house, not to mention participate in the Church community.

One of her skills was the preparation of soap for the family, since buying from the fancy imported shops was too expensive.

Another grandmother in my tree had as much drive, having contributed to her community and family, first as a daughter of an accomplished businessman, and debutant, and later teaching her family and community to sing, dance, and hold festivals to promote the understanding and importance of these art forms. Her middle name was Agnes.
